The Elm – Horse Barn Renovation

Program Information

Mission Statement

To Transform the historical Horse Barn into an innovation space that is both welcoming and accessible to visitors of the University of Wisconsin-Madison as well as a desired place for students to learn and socialize.

Vision Statement

To create a space that emulates a feeling of belonging while fostering creativity and innovation. We will modernize the facility to meet the needs of residents and visitors while preserving the original elements of the building to maintain its historic beauty and integrity. ADA accessible elements, flexible classrooms, and a makerspace will be used to achieve this vision.

Concept Statement

The Elm is intended to be a space for students to collaborate, innovate, and learn while feeling welcomed by all. The space utilizes wood, leather, live plants, a water feature, as well as other natural materials in order to create a strong sense of biophilic design and to make the user feel as though they are within an elm tree. The usage of plants and a water feature allow the space not only visual relief but also auditory. The contrast between the dark wood tones and the calming green tone give the user creates a sense of structure to the space. Opening the first floor all the way to the fourth also allows for movement, as the user can see other users walking through the hallways and utilizing the other spaces in the building. All around, the space is calming and a quick relief from the hustle and bustle of day to day life.

Maintain and preserve the story of the Horse Barn by restoring historical design elements including the exterior gables and original wood trusses.

Honor SoHE’s commitment to sustainability and serve as an extension of space while creating an innovation hub that is unique to the Horse Barn.

Create a Universal Design

Convert this mid-19th century building into an updated facility equipped with ADA requirements and is accessible to all

Prioritize Sustainabillity

Repurpose existing elements in order to avoid excess waste. Specifying sustainable products and material whenever possible

Building History & Site Analysis

1868

The barn was built to house livestock and draft horses by William T. Fish & A.R. Moxley for ~$1800

1899

The “Farm Barn” was then rebuilt and expanded to draft horses on nearby fields by J.T.W Jennings

1971

The building was renamed to the “Horse Barn” and was the home of UW-Madison’s horse program

1995

The building had been used for UW-Madison’s sheep studies and was given a new shingle roof

2020

Currently being used for storage, the barn is in the making of becoming an innovation hub

Location – 520 Elm Drive, Madison, WI

The Horse Barn is located on the West side of the campus of University of Wisconsin-Madison and is centered within the university’s agricultural campus.

The Horse Barn is located near many parts of campus and most conveniently, is only an eight minute walk from the university’s School of Human Ecology.

Since Madison is such a large campus, most students and guests enjoy taking location transportation. The Horse Barn is a 16 minute bus ride to State Street and is near multiple bus stations.

It is also located a brief 20 minute bus ride to Wisconsin’s capitol building, a beautiful and historical building surrounded by restaurants and activity.

From the building, views of Lake Mendota can be seen through the beautiful double-hung cottage style windows on the second floor of the Horse Barn.
